The Uttar Pradesh Defense Estate Office has vacated the Missionaries of Charity's orphanage, a place of hope for orphans. The orphanage was established in 1968 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Missionaries of Charity cared for about 1,500 children and the needy. The Defense Estate Office claims that the land on which the orphanage was located was leased for 90 years and that the lease expired in 2019. The Defense Estates Office (DEO) also said that the Missionaries of Charity should be fined Rs 1 crore a year for illegal possession of land.
'Deepika' reports that the Missionaries of Charity Sisters arrived in Delhi shortly after the evacuation began and sought time to meet DEO officials and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The Missionaries of Charity had asked the private individuals to vacate the land, which they had been operating for more than five decades, on a 90 - year lease, which expired in 2019 and was therefore owned by them.
They had to vacate the institution which had legally adopted about 1,500 children and was functioning very accurately. Many orphaned girls were sent here to get married. Despite numerous protests in Kanpur against the eviction, the Missionaries of Charity nuns evacuated their homes despite protests.
The orphans and the poor who were here have been shifted to institutions in places like Varanasi and Allahabad. The Shishubhavan, which had been functioning for decades, has now been evacuated by the authorities after the Central Government rejected the FCRA registration application for the Foreign Aid of the Missionaries of Charity.
