Turkish Minister of Culture and Entertainment Mehmet Nuri Erzoi said that the architecture and decoration of the church, which is a fine example of Eastern Roman art, is of great importance in the Christian world. St. Nicholas Church was built in AD 520 at Demre, where St. Nicholas was buried in the ancient port city of Patara, also known as Jelemis in Antalya, Turkey.

The main work done in the temple was the construction of protective roof, restoration of wall paintings and mosaic floor which are reflections of Byzantine art and architecture. The chruch, which is located 3 feet below the sea level, was protected from the moisture of the earth and rain, and works were also carried out to facilitate the access to the church.
