Commission for Scheduled Caste Converts to Christianity and Islam

The central Goverment move comes at a time when petitions seeking benefits for Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity and Islam are pending before the Supreme Court. The central government is about to form a commission to study the Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity and Islam.

The commission will study the social, economic and educational status of the converted Scheduled Tribes. The impact of adding more people to the existing list of Scheduled Tribes will also be studied.

The commission will have three or four members of cabinet rank. It may take more than a year to submit the report. The Ministry of Minority Affairs has responded sympathetically to the formation of the commission.
