Christian homes attacked over rumours in Minya, Egypt
Communal violence has erupted in Egypt’s Upper Egypt province of Minya following online rumours that a young Christian man was having an affair with a Muslim girl. Prayers for peace have been raised after attacks on Christian homes and institutions in the village of Naslat Jaf.
According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide, hate speech spread on social media angered some in the Muslim community. They gathered outside Christian homes and threw stones and explosives at buildings. Police were called to the scene and arrested some people. Authorities are now reportedly trying to organize an informal reconciliation meeting in the area.
