BJP’s Christian candidate wins in Chhattisgarh

The lone Christian candidate, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), achieved a resounding victory in the Chhattisgarh assembly, securing a compelling margin of 24,128 votes. This remarkable win stands despite initial opposition from a faction within the saffron party, citing concerns over the party's stance against religious conversions in the state.Minj emerged victorious over his closest Congress competitor and incumbent MLA, Dr. Pritam Ram, in the Lundra (ST) constituency of North Chhattisgarh. This region holds significant pockets where the Christian population can sway support toward any political party. The BJP claimed victory across all 14 assembly seats in North Chhattisgarh.

Notably, prominent Congress figures like Deputy Chief Minister T S Singhdeo lost their traditional Ambikapur seat to the BJP's Rajesh Agrawal by a narrow margin of 94 votes. Additionally, another minister and tribal leader, Amarjeet Singh Bhagat, faced defeat in the Sitapur (ST) constituency, a stronghold for the Congress. The BJP's Ram Kumar Toppo, who resigned from Army to contest the elections, secured the seat with a lead of 17,160 votes. Sitapur constituency had been evading BJP since independence.Prabodh Minj, a two-time Mayor of the Ambikapur municipal corporation, commands significant popularity in the region and enjoys considerable support from his own community.

As a BJP candidate, Minj actively engaged with the Christian community, rallying support for his party's candidates in neighboring constituencies, including Ambikapur and Sitapur.Minj, a former leader of the Indian National Congress, switched his allegiance to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 2003. However, his tenure with the NCP was short-lived, as the leader from the Surguja region soon joined the BJP. Upon joining the BJP, Minj was tasked with contesting the Ambikapur Municipal Corporation election in 2004, where he was elected as Mayor, a position he held for ten years. In 2019, Minj contested the municipal elections once again and secured a seat as a corporator.Despite opposition to Minj's candidacy from a faction in Lundra, the BJP continued to support him, as retracting the decision might have adversely affected the party’s performance.
